Petroleum Systems operating in the Western Barents Sea, offshore Northern Norway
ABSTRACT
A regional review of 16,550 geochemical analyses obtained from 55 wells available from NPD's public database challenges the conventional view of uplift controlling maturity in the Western Barents Sea. This has implications for uplift and the concomitant gas expansion causing the displacement of oil from the major structures of the area. Source rocks with oil potential are identified using public data made available by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) on the World Wide Web. Based primarily on Rock-Eval analyses, almost all identified source rock intervals contain a mix of oil-prone and gas-prone kerogen. Rich source rocks with mixed oil and gas potential are identified in Lower Carboniferous and Upper Triassic-Lower Jurassic coals, and shales at the Upper Triassic, Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous levels. On inspection of the well logs and core photographs available on the NPD web site, many of the most promising source rock analyses are shown to derive from the highly selective sampling of thin beds, which are not predicted, on structure, to provide sufficient source rock volumes to produce commercial quantities of petroleum.
This updates and expands the work originally produced within the Circum Arctic Report.

CAP : Wells Database Update 34.9 Mb
The well summary database has been updated with well data including operator, status, drilling dates, TD age and formation, and availability of information on well tests, core, formation tops etc, that have become available since the completion of the Circum Arctic Project (CAP). The locations of the 66 new wells covered are shown on three maps.
